Two First Place Finishes and New Novice Obedience Title

CPT’s competition obedience team recently achieved two first place finishes and a new title at the Novice level.

On Saturday, July 14, CPT competition student Jennie Walsh and her Swiss Mountain Dog Mix, Argos, earned a FIRST PLACE finish at the Novice A level with a score of 192.5 in the Australian Shepherd Club of America’s (ASCA) Big Kahuna all-breed obedience trial hosted by the Greater Atlanta Australian Shepherd Club in Chamblee, Georgia. Jennie and Argos delivered an outstanding performance in the on-leash heeling, off-leash heeling, stand for examination, recall, sit stay, and down stay portions of the competition. They lost a total of only 7.5 points out of a possible 200 points, due to minor bumping on the inside turn of the figure-8 exercise and some crooked sits, which CPT competition coach Karen Smalley will correct before Jennie and Argos’ next show.

On Sunday, July 15, Jennie and Argos returned to the second day of the Big Kahuna event in an attempt to earn their third and final leg toward their ASCA Novice Obedience/Companion Dog (CD) title. Although their score of 187 did not duplicate Saturday’s exceptional display, again it was adept enough for a FIRST PLACE blue ribbon finish. Moreover, Jennie and Argos earned the CD title that they have been preparing for over a year to achieve!

CPT has several other dogs of various breeds, including a Boxer, Rottweiler and a West Highland Terrier, preparing to show in ASCA and AKC competition over the next few months. Competition obedience is great fun and provides an exciting avenue for continuing your pet’s training past the Intermediate level.
