As detailed in the November 19, 2015 CPT News post, entitled “CPT Participates in Gwinnett Jaildogs Program,” since early October 2015 CPT has been educating prisoners how to train rescue dogs to participate in the The Dog Project’s MRI program. The goal of CPT’s participation is threefold:
1) To increase the number of trained MRI-ready dogs,
2) To improve the adoptability of the dogs, and
3) To provide valuable volunteer service to the community.
The inmates have been attentive, cooperative students that have achieved outstanding progress in a short period of time. In just two months, several of the dogs are performing out of sight stays within the MRI simulator, performing motionless down-stays within the MRI coil simulator and chin rest, and understanding the Experiment 1 hand signals.
The results are exciting. We look forward in Quarter 1 2016 to conducting our first live MRI of a dog from the Jaildogs program.
