Alex is a member of Central Georgia K-9 Search and Rescue. The study used noninvasive fMRI brain imaging to measure activity in the amygdala of dogs upon exposure to a human-dog social situation where the dog’s caregiver provided attention to another dog. No previous study neuroscientifically showed the exhibition of canine jealousy.
Jealousy progresses beyond envy. Whereas envy is a desire to obtain resources in the possession of another, jealousy is identified by a set of negative emotional and behavioral responses when a rival receives something one wants for oneself. Although several brain regions, including the hypothalamus and insula, may activate upon the onset of jealousy, the amygdala is the most relevant brain region.

The Emory-CPT canine fMRI research team’s recent project obtained attention from Coren due to his interest in visual processing and human-canine interaction. Coren lauds how using canine fMRI the Emory-CPT team became the first researchers to definitively demonstrate an explicit facial processing area in the canine brain. Research conducted by Dog Star Technologies, a canine neuroscience company co-founded by CPT’s Mark Spivak, was featured in the Spring 2015 issue of the Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) magazine, “The Companion.” The article, entitled “Understanding How Assistance Dogs Think- Science at Canine Companions for Independence,” discusses bi-coastal research funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and conducted by Dog Star Technologies and Dog Star’s subcontractors Emory University, Georgia Tech University’s entrepreneurial research arm- the Georgia Tech Research Corporation (GTRC), and the University of California, Berkeley.

In addition to conducting fMRI-based canine neuroscience research, CPT, Dog Star Technologies, and the Emory University Dog Project Team conduct canine psychology research that is behaviorally-based. In September 2014, the mentioned participants conducted behavioral research in conjunction with the University of Arizona and University of Florida psychology departments. The September 2014 experiments that studied behavior within a radial arm maze provided information about the working and spatial memory ability of canines. More recent experiments conducted on March 15 and 29, 2015 studied inhibitory control.

The bill, authored by State Senator Ellis Black and supported by the American Kennel Club, passed the Georgia Senate on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 by a vote of 42-11. The bill next proceeds to the State House.

Appie and Robert are two of The Netherlands’ top KNPV competition and police dog trainers. They also train performance horses that are well known as crowd pleasers at Dutch events, especially when the horses work in combination with dogs and chickens.
