CPT Student Wins High In Trial

September has been an exciting month for CPT’s Competition Program. All participants performed with consistent excellence.

On Saturday, September 20 CPT enrolled three dog/handler teams in the Atlanta Kennel Club AKC dog obedience trials in the Novice A class. One CPT student took third place and the remaining students each received commendable scores of 191.5 out of a possible 200 points.

On Sunday, September 21 during the Newnan Kennel Club AKC trials we fared even better. CPT’s two competitors in the Novice A class achieved first and third place out of 24 dog/handler teams. Moreover, the first place dog was not only high in class but HIGH IN TRIAL with an outstanding score of 198.5.

Emery Deyo and her Golden Retriever, Hudson, achieved third place on Saturday with a score of 194.5 and first place and High In Trial on Sunday with a phenomenal 198.5. Emery was extremely pleased especially considering these were the first two competitions for her and Hudson. She needs one more qualifying score to complete her CD title and then progress to the Open level. Emery and Hudson were gamers who thrived in the performance arena to produce at a level even superior to what they normally exhibit in practice.

Jennifer Falkner and her Boston Terrier, Hampton, scored a 191.5 on Saturday which won the award for High Boston Terrier In Trial. Still, Jennifer was disappointed. Rules infractions committed by Jennifer though inconsequential nevertheless deducted 6 points from what otherwise would have been a first place score of 197.5. However, Jennifer and Hampton regrouped to achieve a third place on Sunday with a score of 195. By achieving their third qualifying score they also garnered the AKC Companion Dog (CD) title. Jennifer and Hampton first came to CPT for basic pet training. They had a wonderful time and so desired an avenue to continue learning and improving. That avenue was the Competition Program. At first they participated just for fun. Now that they have shown they can “compete with the big dogs” they participate to win and plan to continue onward through the Open and Utility levels.

Kori Bevis and her Labrador Retriever, Harley, participated on Saturday only. In their first trial they achieved an excellent score of 191.5. Harley is a high drive, high potential dog and Kori is an excellent handler. We expect Kori and Harley to receive scores in the high 190’s in upcoming trials.

Our successes have also continued on the Agility front. Assistant Agility Trainer Holly Schmidt and her Toy Poodle, Pippin, have won several more competitions. They now have completed 360 out of a required 750 points toward their Masters Agility Championship (MACH) and were invited to the AKC Agility Nationals.
